Attic insulation in Ireland: SEAI grants and what still sits outside the grant

Attic insulation is the measure SEAI still describes as one of the most cost-effective upgrades. The grant is fixed by dwelling type. The contractor’s bill is not.

FTB / qualifying welfare

Official amounts: SEAI individual grants and Citizens Information. Standard attic: €2,000 detached; €1,500 semi-d / end terrace; €1,400 mid-terrace; €1,100 apartment. Higher attic grants apply for eligible first-time buyers and some welfare payments (up to €2,500 detached).

What the grant does not buy

A leaking roof, new hatch, walk-way boards, tank jackets, moving downlights, or ventilation. If the roofer finds wet timber, that is a roof job — see roof replacement — not an insulation grant.

Dublin, Cork, Galway

The grant is the same in every county. Access in a Dublin terrace (hatch size, parking for bags) can still lift the private share. SCSI rebuild rates are higher in Dublin than Cork or Galway; that is a labour signal only.

When to stop DIY

Do not work around live downlights or damaged cables. Do not block eaves vents. Do not walk on plasterboard. If the roof is wet, stop and call a roofer. Electrical changes need a Safe Electric contractor.

Frequently asked questions

Does the grant pay the whole attic?

Often not. Hatch, boarding, tanks, downlights and roof repairs sit outside.

Can I claim and also do a One Stop Shop later?

You generally cannot claim the same measure twice. Ask SEAI / the One Stop Shop before you start.

Is a roofer the same as an insulation contractor?

Not always. The SEAI measure needs a contractor registered for that grant.

When should I stop DIY?

Around downlights, extract fans, electrical cables and any roof leak. See the safety note below.
